does a "typical" parking garage cost $15,000-$16,000 PER SPACE to construct?

Since I have no idea how much a car weighs, or what it takes to support it, or the engineering skills necessary to design something which can support twenty to forty of them per floor on four to six floors, while providing room to maneuver them around...

...I have no idea. But that looks like a lot of skill, equipment, and materials to me. And I'm assuming that this is just the construction, and I don't have to factor in buying land.

Okay, yeah, that's all reasonable. Thanks; I needed a calming influence.

The engineering has mostly been done but the sitework to make sure the ground itself can support that much weight upon it is something that has to be studied for each new garage and then actually done.

It's a LOT of steel and a lot of concrete.

That also makes sense. Thank you.

Back when I was in student government, it was $10K per space as a ballpark figure.

The biggest issue is concrete and steel and land and design -- and security design for a parking garage is not trivial, as they are inherently high-crime areas. Smart design would be nice (all that wasted space that could be used for solar panels *cries*) but I'm not holding my breath. Also, ventilation for both people and cars.

More good points. Thank you.

I was just utterly incensed at "UT is building a new parking garage, and while an 'ordinary' garage could be constructed for $15,000 to $16,000 per space, we're looking at more like $30,000 per space so that it will look good across from the stadium." This is on property UT already owns (an existing surface lot, half of which is being taken for a new building).

Taxes, filing fees, bonds, surveying costs, site inspection, drainage, impact inspection and fees, eco-studies and salvage costs. All of these must be done, (and paid for) before you can even start to do ground prep.

More things I hadn't thought of. Thank you.
