"The correct response to the Irish greeting, 'Top of the morning to you' is, 'And the rest of the day to yourself.'"

If this is true, it is delightful; if it is not true, it is still delightful but false.

Anyone who has lived or traveled in Ireland care to weigh in on this?

We hate it.

We never use it.

If you were to use it with us as a greeting, the best reaction you could hope for is an incredulous stare.

Sorry!

This actually does not surprise me too much, given that this book also gives the (debunked, as far as I know) derivation of "fuck = for unlawful carnal knowledge".

So what is an appropriate greeting? "Hi," "Hello," "Good morning (afternoon, evening)"?

If you want some properly et'nic greetings:

Howrya?

So, what's the crack? (crack != crack cocaine)

Story? (pronounced "shtory" and really only can be carried off if you're a bit of a scanger. Scanger is a low social class who wear tracksuits and hoodies, have close haircuts and gelled fringes and look a bit shifty.)

Sounds like "scanger" in Ireland is approximately equivalent to "chav" in England?

The crack line reminds me of the Men of Worth song, ~At Home with the Exiles~ off of "In Full Flight" album. (I'd link to it but can't find one. I almost didn't find the title because our network storage device is offline and I'm unsure where the physical cd is. It could be in the rack downstairs or it could be in one of the girls' rooms or it could be in a car (except only the Volvo plays cds and it's got VNV Nation right now.)

Okay, but - my grandfather *did* use precisely that call/response. (Mind you, he died pre-2000, at the age of 90-something. So, it could well have fallen out of favor a hell of a long time ago, and still have been favored once :-).)

I'll greet some of my friends with "Top o' the food chain to ye!"

That "and the rest of the day to yourself" reminds me of Three Stooges who used a version of it. I don't recall any of the Irish folk I've ever met using any form of the greeting, but they'd been in the USA for decades by the time I met them.
