. . . or does the woman in this picture look like she's lying in a pool of blood?

Note: Pic is not graphic, or anyway not meant to be, but it has, to me, some weird overtones.

If the picture isn't there, try this link: http://pics.livejournal.com/janetmiles/pic/0002d8aw/ .

Sort of worked - the image came up blank until I clicked on the image space itself. And, yes, it is just you. No sanguinary overtones to my eyes at all. Odd image, yes. Pool of blood, no.

Not working for me, either, Firefox or Safari. Get a blank frame with a indication that it is a TIFF.

Hmph. Okay. I shall try to save it as some other format and re-submit it.

Works now. I can see the petals as blood spatters, if already primed for spatter-punk.

Probably the wedding gown is a touchier subject for me -- we have An Extravaganza coming up, and are dreading it with a mighty dread.

:-)

I just noticed the effect of the petals when I was re-uploading the picture; I hadn't consciously taken that in before.

is not visible because it is filetype TIFF - a respectable filetype but somewhat uncommon - browsers will show gif, png and jpg [ the 3 websafe formats] -- I downloaded the tiff file and looked at the Rangefinder title -

yes the associacion with blood is there I think. Thats what this red does. Even if real blood is less bright and less 'clean'.#

I suggest transforming the picture to jpg or png and re-uploading it (jpg will be smaller )
Irfan-view is freeware and can do that if there is no other tool.

Done, thanks. My scanner only saves as TIFF (or PDF). I'll know for next time.

I can see the picture just fine. But you're right; it's kind of odd . . .

I see it... and as a swimming pool, not pool of blood.
Those little blue tiles do it for me.
But I live in Florida.

Oh, I'm sorry -- I meant the red shadow on the red lounge / cushion. And the red petals.

posted by [identity profile] fatfred.livejournal.com at 09:48pm on 21/02/2012

Red cushion looks like an air mattress.
Now, why she would be swimming in a wedding dress...???

But that's where my brain went.

This Californian sees the swimming pool (enhanced by the shadow of the bench making it look like she's lying on a bright-red diving board) and the pool of blood (with, as noted above, the rose petals reading as spatter).

I think the combination of the subject's position and the bright red does make your mind go to "murder victim". And given that this is a photography magazine, I'd be willing to give 50/50 odds that it's intentional on the part of the photographer.

I suspect the odds are even higher than that, but yeah.

On the other hand, why?

I'm not seeing "lying in a pool of blood."

I am seeing "Uncomfortable pose in an itchy dress" and also clutter.

The blue tiles say swimming pool, but there doesn't seem to be any water. The bouqet on the round tray/table thing is extraneous - we get it already, she's a bride - and the additional shape (round) and texture (wood) interrupt the shape of the model's arm and take up space that would have been better left open, particularly for a magazine cover.

I expect that the red is supposed to read as passion, but from the expression on the woman's face and the position of her arm/hand, all I'm getting is "bad menstrual cramps".

The petals, I don't object to.

Heh. Yeah, I could read that as "bad cramps".

I don't see a POOL of blood, but blood spatter and dead girl, that I see. I expect to see Horatio Caine stepping into the frame. "It seems the photographer," *puts glasses on*, "got the shot." YYYYEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH!

Oh, geeze. Yeah, it's a Horatio Caine moment all over.

Well, what I suspect was *intended* to be a shadow on the cushion *does* look more like a pool of blood. Also, I don't see *anybody* assuming that position naturally. Though I can't aquite see a corpse staying in it either.

posted by [identity profile] janetmiles.livejournal.com at 02:09am on 22/02/2012
I think it *was* intended to be a shadow. But the position, the color, the spatters -- I'm half tempted to send it off to Sociological Images, which has a sort of ongoing feature about dead-seeming women in advertising.

posted by [identity profile] starcat-jewel.livejournal.com at 03:40am on 22/02/2012
Do that -- I'd be interested in hearing what they have to say.

Personally, I don't get "pool of blood", but I do agree that the rose petals are Unfortunate and look more like blood-splatter.

Yes, this. I definitely saw the seeming-pool-of-blood and blood-spattered-wedding-dress effect as soon as the picture loaded.

I think it does. (And I'd assume it was intentional.)

holy crap!

Yes. It does look like a dead bride. Or a bride who decided to take a nap, after sprinkling rose petals around so they would not look rose-petal-shaped but round-spatter-of-blood shape, after putting her bridal bouquet on the ground near her, and closing her eyes and falling asleep.

[Further ... the "pool of blood" thing works for me on first glance, and for about a second, and of course lingers. But a different part of the brain starts analyzing, and there it gets confused. The shadow, the tiling, and then of course the words and lettering. I have a guess that the red thing is a diving board, right? So does this picture has some hidden meaning about "taking the plunge"? I'm going to take a look at Sociological Images.]

I get "bridal model laying in a seriously awkward on-her-side pose, hovering over a red cushion-thing, which itself is floating over a floor of blue tiles, with the addition of rose petals on the bridal model and on the blue tiles but none floating like the bridal model or red cushion-thing"

To me, the pose is so ridiculously awkward that it doesn't even seem like she's making contact with the cushion-thing. I agree that the tiles look like what you might see at the bottom of a pool, but in this case, there's no water. So... cushion with frame and feet directly under it? diving board? hovercraft trying to get away from her? brachial support as she pretends to be superwoman on her side?

Totally. Don't. Get it.

Only if she and the pool of blood are floating in the air and casting a shadow on the tile floor...

I don't see a pool of blood, BUT the magazine title + her position had me seeing the flower stems as the stock of a rifle and the petals as blood spatters. I imagine it's supposed to look enough like a crime scene to get your attention because, ha ha, isn't violence against women FUNNY? Ugh.
