I had seen the first picture... but not the rest.
I love all the wood.
And I'd probably cover a few of the shelves with picture frames on hinges. Just to show off artwork.

Aha! That answers my question, "But what if you have art AND books?" The obvious solution is hinged panels of varying sizes, with hooks for picture-hanging, which allow you to still reach the books behind them. Note: for large pictures, weight may become an issue -- you may want to make some of the uprights wide enough to hold sturdier hinges.

That's always been the question! Do I use the wall space for book cases or artwork?
If I built my own house I'd have both, or do double walls like John Soames house in London.
*thinking* OK, perhaps more like shoji walls to protect the books and show off the art. That way you get the best of both!

User [livejournal.com profile] aldersprig referenced to your post from Want this house (http://aldersprig.livejournal.com/206385.html) saying: [...] at Want this house [...]

Wow. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside...I could own ALL the books. All of them.

My database professor claimed a similar house -- he had mony thousands of books and they were all shelved, and there were shelves everywhere. (But he was more the type to just nail some angle brackets up and add a shelf as needed, a "board over the door" kind of thing.)

The article said they take earthquakes into account -- any clues as to what that is about?

(re other comments: Of course there are bookshelves near the toilet and the bathtub! Where else would they be so useful?)
